IAIN CARRINGTON
I was born in Beverley in East Yorkshire at the Westwood
hospital, a stone’s throw away from the Racecourse
and then moved to Dufftown in the North East
of Scotland when I was eight. ‘Helping’ on local farms
until I left school sparked my interest in working with
farm animals. After passing the required exams to be
offered a place, in October 1975 (at the tender age of
seventeen) I arrived in Edinburgh to start a Veterinary
degree.
After five years of hard work (and hard play) I completed my degree
graduating in July 1980 and gaining my registration with The Royal College of
Veterinary surgeons.
Initially entering mixed practice to gain experience in all fields of veterinary
general practice, it rapidly became clear to me that working with farm animals
and horses was where my interests lay. In 1982 I moved to a three man large
animal practice in a place called Llansantffraid in the Welsh borders where I
was to remain for over five years. It was here that I met Mary who I married in
June 1988, shortly after I had moved to Hexham. In 1991 I became a partner in
a practice in Hexham where I remained until the end of 2001.
The 2001 FMD epidemic changed my life
dramatically, as it did for many in the farming
community. Things would never be
the same for those who had been involved
and those who had not would never
understand, so I took the opportunity to
start my own Practice concentrating on
farm and horse work. Intake Vets grew
rapidly and shortly afterwards I invited
Nick to join me and David became part
of the team later that same year after his
return from ‘down under’. I work with both
farm animals and horses being a true
general practitioner in my chosen field
although I also get to run the business
side as well!
I write a monthly farm column for The Journal, have published work in professional publications
plus also featuring on radio and TV. As senior course vet at Hexham Racecourse I have been
closely involved in the development of the veterinary facilities at the course, further improving
the high standard of care we are able to offer.
Mary and I live in Hexham with our two children (Mark and Sarah); a yellow Labrador called Sam
and a single goldfish!
